Core Statutory Responsibilities

  • Social Care & Safeguarding: Fulfilling duties under the Care Act 2014 to provide adult social care, protect vulnerable adults and their property, and act as a Corporate Parent for children and care leavers.
  • Education & Childcare: Managing school governance support, special educational needs, and executing statutory duties under the Childcare Act 2006.
  • Housing & Homelessness: Maintaining homelessness prevention targets, managing temporary accommodation, and enforcing minimum housing standards for local residents.
  • Planning & Land Use: Operating local development frameworks, conducting Statements of Community Involvement, and fulfilling the statutory "duty to cooperate" on regional planning matters.
  • Regulatory & Business Services: Inspecting commercial and food premises, issuing statutory hygiene reports, and calibrating weights and measures equipment.
  • Highways & Infrastructure: Maintaining local road networks, managing footways, and repairing public highways and potholes.
  • Environmental & Waste Services: Delivering statutory waste collection, disposal programs, and local environmental health controls.

Key Responsibilities and Services

  • Highways and Transport: Maintaining 2,400 miles of roads, repairing potholes, surface dressing, and managing footways and cycleways.
  • Social Care and Family Support: Providing adult social care, safeguarding and supporting children in need, and administering care allowances and assistance.
  • Planning and Development: Processing local planning applications, strategic planning, and enforcing building regulations.
  • Housing and Environment: Managing public health, environmental health, community safety, housing assistance, and local waste partnership strategies.
  • Libraries and Culture: Issuing books, managing digital e-resources, and supporting community engagement and cultural services.
  • Flood Risk Management: Acting as the Lead Local Flood Authority to manage local flood risks alongside partner agencies.
